No matter if it is recycled containerboard or top end folding box board, surface application of starch and pigment coating have critical impact on final product quality.
Coated boxboard producers want smooth, streak free surface with lowest possible cost, maintaining good runnability and overall efficiency.
Recycled based containerboard machines, making their products from continuously deteriorating raw materials, need starch to fulfill their strength targets, especially when moving towards lighter weight boards. Surface starch quality and proper application plays important role on this.
However, coating and sizing on alone does not guarantee good properties of finished product. It is always a combination of base sheet properties and surface application.
